Made in Nigeria Ingredients - Boosting Our Gems Through Tourism and Hospitality

Hotels have a unique opportunity to serve as a cultural ambassador, showcasing the essence of a country to foreign visitors. From the food they serve, to the music they play, to the traditional artifacts they display, hotels have the power to bring the rich culture, history, and traditions of a nation to life. By highlighting the local cuisine, music, and customs, hotels can provide a truly immersive experience for guests and offer a glimpse into the soul of the country. In doing so, hotels not only create memorable and authentic experiences for guests but also play a critical role in promoting the cultural heritage of the nation and supporting local communities. Let’s delve into the significance of hotels in advancing the utilization of produce from Nigerian farmers and locally made products in Nigeria, and the reasons why this should be a top priority for the Tourism and Agric sector across the country.

Visitors who arrive at the airport often check into a hotel as their first stop in the country. Many of these travelers, particularly those visiting for business purposes such as meetings or conferences, may not venture outside the hotel grounds during their stay. For these individuals, the hotel they are staying in serves as their primary point of exposure to the country they are visiting. If the hotel fails to showcase the culture, food, music or other aspects of Nigeria, these visitors may leave without truly experiencing the essence of the country, even if they spend several weeks here.

One of the most important reasons why hotels should prioritize cooking with local produce and condiments is that it allows guests to experience the authentic flavors of the local cuisine. These ingredients, often unique to the region, are not only delicious but also rich in cultural and historical significance. By incorporating these ingredients into their dishes, hotels can give guests a taste of the local culture, offering them a true sense of place and a more memorable dining experience.

Incorporating local ingredients in their offerings has substantial economic advantages for both the hospitality sector and the surrounding community. By procuring produce and condiments from local farmers and suppliers, hotels can aid the local agriculture industry and stimulate the regional economy. For example, they can serve coffee brewed with locally grown coffee beans and provide snacks, chocolates, and sweets made with indigenous ingredients. This approach not only supports local farmers and suppliers, but it also generates job opportunities in the agriculture and food industries, thereby contributing to the economic growth of the region.

Furthermore, promoting the use of local ingredients in cooking in hotels and restaurants can also help to promote their export to other countries. By showcasing the unique flavors and quality of these ingredients, hotels can raise awareness and increase demand for them globally, helping to expand the local agriculture industry and support the development of the local economy. This can also help to promote the country's culinary heritage and contribute to its reputation as a foodie destination, further boosting its tourism industry.

Exposing local producers and farmers to international hospitality businesses can provide valuable insights into global best practices and quality standards. By observing the processes and systems used by these businesses, local producers can identify areas for improvement and adopt similar strategies to enhance the quality of their products and services. This can help to raise the bar for local agriculture and food production, making their products and services more competitive and appealing to a wider range of customers.

Working with international hospitality businesses can also provide local producers with access to training and development opportunities, helping them to build their skills and expertise in areas such as food safety, quality control, and sustainable agriculture practices. This can help to increase the quality and consistency of their products and services, making them more attractive to international hospitality businesses and helping to create a sustainable supply chain. Furthermore, exposure to international hospitality businesses can also help to increase the visibility of local producers, allowing them to reach new markets and expand their customer base, both locally and globally.

To motivate hotels and restaurants, the government needs to offer various incentives that make it more appealing and cost-effective for hotels to choose local ingredients, thereby creating a mutually beneficial situation for all parties involved. One such incentive is tax benefits, such as lower tax rates or tax exemptions for hotels that prioritize local ingredients in their cuisine. This can lower the cost of acquiring local ingredients, making it more attractive for hotels to select local producers instead of international suppliers.

Governments can also offer marketing and advertising support to hotels that emphasize the usage of
local ingredients. This can involve establishing a "local sourcing" certification scheme, which hotels can display to promote their dedication to local ingredients. Governments can collaborate with hotels to initiate local sourcing programs and promote them through advertising efforts and events, elevating awareness and boosting the demand for locally sourced ingredients.

By lending their support to hospitality sector for the promotion of local agriculture produce, spices, and condiments, the government can play a critical role in fostering economic growth and job creation in Nigeria. Simultaneously, hotels and restaurants can provide their guests with a one-of-a-kind, genuine dining experience, thereby elevating the standing of local cuisine and stimulating the tourism sector. Overall, this creates a mutually beneficial outcome for all involved parties.

Value Addition - Driving the Success of Nigeria's Local Producers

Food Producers with their products at the PHSB Workshop (2021)
for Stay-At-Home-Women in food business held by Mrs. Saudat Salami

In the late 1990s, I established one of my first businesses, a food processing company that specialized in packaging and processing spices and food condiments such as crayfish, locust beans, palm oil, Egusi, Ogbonno and others. I started this company after realizing that the supermarkets in Lagos only stocked imported spices and that local spices and condiments could only be obtained from open markets. My company successfully supplied packaged condiments to major supermarkets in Surulere, Lagos for a few years, before I launched another company, Easyshop Easycook. This experience opened my eyes to the untapped opportunities in the industry and the potential for job and wealth creation through developing the value chain by promoting the sector. Despite some progress, this sector remains largely untapped even after more than 25 years.

Thirty Six Foods Chocolate
Promoting the growth and development of local producers in Nigeria's food industry is critical to the country's overall economic and social advancement. Agriculture is a key sector in Nigeria's economy, employing a significant portion of the population, estimated at around 35%. In fact, agriculture contributes more to the country's GDP than even the petroleum industry. Given these important contributions, it is crucial to encourage value addition among small local producers in order to enhance their wealth and improve their standard of living. By supporting local producers, Nigeria can not only drive economic growth but also support the well-being of its citizens.

Value addition is the process of transforming raw materials into finished products that have higher value in the market. In the agricultural sector, this involves converting raw agricultural materials into processed products, such as cocoa into chocolate. The benefits of value addition for farmers, the economy, and small producers are substantial and can be seen across
Nigeria today.

Loshes Chocolate

One of the key benefits of value addition for farmers is that it increases their income. For example, many Nigerian, Kenya and Ghanaian companies have started processing cocoa into cocoa powder and chocolate; companies like Loshes Chocolate and Thirty Six Foods Chocolates are a few of them.  The sale of a ton of raw cocoa beans generates less revenue than the sale of a ton of chocolate. By processing their cocoa into chocolate, they earn more money and improve their livelihoods. This increase in income also helps to reduce poverty in rural areas and leads to the development of more sustainable farming practices.

Value addition also benefits the economy by creating jobs and increasing exports. The production of processed agricultural products creates jobs in manufacturing, packaging, and distribution. This helps to reduce unemployment and contributes to the growth of the economy. Additionally, by exporting finished products rather than raw materials, countries can earn more foreign currency and improve their balance of trade.

Ady's Foods Mart
According to a study by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the value addition of agricultural products has led to a significant increase in the earnings of farmers in the country. The study found that the value addition of agricultural products in Nigeria increased by 12% between 2015 and 2020, contributing to a 20% increase in the average earnings of farmers during the same period. This highlights the positive impact that value addition has had on the agriculture sector in Nigeria and demonstrates the potential for further growth and development. Additionally, the study found that value-added agricultural products, such as processed food, accounted for over 60% of Nigeria's total agricultural exports, further emphasizing the importance of value addition in the sector. These statistics highlight the significant role that value addition plays in improving the earnings of farmers and supporting the overall development of Nigeria's agriculture sector.

Xtar Kitchen Sauces
One of the main benefits of processing raw ingredients into finished goods is preservation. For example, turning tomatoes into Sauces, ketchup, puree or juice allows for the tomato to have a longer shelf life and be used throughout the year. Tomato Jos based in Kaduna, Nigeria is one of the new companies in this sector. The company started with farming tomatoes and later went on to producing their purees. When raw tomatoes are harvested, they have a short shelf life and can quickly spoil if not used or processed promptly. However, by processing the tomatoes into other products, they can be stored for longer periods, reducing food waste and ensuring that they are available for use when needed. This not only benefits consumers but also helps to increase the income of local producers as they can sell their products for a longer period of time and to a wider market.

Timdol Snacks

Another area is producing local snacks, spices, condiments, oils and
other products
that can generate significant income for women and youths in Africa. Most of our local condiments and snacks are still being produced traditionally and have still not been packaged in forms that can make it to our supermarkets or exported abroad. According to a study by the African Development Bank, women are often involved in the production of these goods and make up a significant portion of the informal economy in Africa. This means that by producing and selling local snacks, spices, oils and other products, women can create new income-generating opportunities for themselves and improve their financial stability.

Many things hinder value addition of raw produce, affordable technology, access to capital and infrastructure are some of the major issues. Solving these problems can help local producers to standardize their processes and improve their bottom line by increasing efficiency, improving production capabilities, and supporting business management and competitiveness. By providing access to capital, investing in technology and infrastructure, governments and organizations can help to spur economic growth and support the development of local producers.

BCF Oils and Flour

Another way to help the sector is building industrial hubs. An industrial hub can play a crucial role in supporting local producers by providing access to technology, infrastructure, and resources that can help to standardize their processes and improve their bottom line. Industrial hubs can also provide local producers with access to training and resources that can help to improve their business management skills and increase their competitiveness. This should be well situated as the location of industrial hubs is determined by a variety of factors, including the availability of natural resources, transportation infrastructure, access to markets, the availability of skilled labor, and government policies and incentives. The location of an industrial hub should be chosen based on the needs of the industries it will serve, such as proximity to raw materials or access to shipping ports.

In addition to these factors, the cost of doing business and the quality of life in the region should also be considered, as these can impact the ability of businesses to recruit and retain employees. The availability of infrastructure, such as power and water supplies, should also be considered when selecting the location of an industrial hub, as these can have a significant impact on the competitiveness and viability of the businesses in the hub.

Finally, we need regulation and standardization to compete and this is where NAFDAC comes in. NAFDAC can help small producers in Nigeria by streamlining regulations, providing technical assistance and training, offering incentives and support, and partnering with other organizations to provide resources. This can help to reduce the administrative burden on small producers and ensure that they are able to meet regulatory requirements and grow their businesses, promoting the growth and development of the food industry in Nigeria while ensuring food safety and quality.

Participants at a PHSB Workshop (2019) for women
in food business held by Mrs. Saudat Salami

Boosting the earnings of local producers in Nigeria's food industry is essential to the country's overall economic and social advancement. By encouraging value addition and supporting small farmers, we do not only drive economic growth but also improve the livelihoods of those in the agriculture sector. Investing in affordable technology, infrastructure, and industrial hubs can help standardize processes and increase competitiveness, leading to a more robust and thriving food industry in Nigeria. By working together to support local producers, we can ensure a bright future for Nigeria's agriculture sector and the well-being of its citizens.

Building A Business With A Friend – Keys to a Fulfilling Venture

Starting a business or project with a close friend is a subject that often elicits cautionary advice, especially from family members in Nigeria. Despite having complementing skills, shared passions, and a strong personal connection, many people are hesitant to pursue a business partnership with their friends. This is due to concerns about the potential impact on the friendship, the possibility of differing goals and expectations, unequal dedication to the venture, and disparate skills and strengths. At the heart of these concerns is the fear that disagreements over money and financial decisions could strain or even sever the friendship. As a result, many choose to preserve the friendship instead of testing it through a business partnership.

I have a mix of experiences with running businesses and doing projects with friends, some of which ended due to money issues. Despite this, I am not completely deterred from exploring this option in the future. To me, friendship is invaluable, as I do not make friends easily and value the emotional support, personal growth, joy, laughter, and sense of belonging that they bring whenever I make friends.

Drawing on my 20 years of experience, this guide will delve into the challenges of starting a business with a friend and offer practical tips for success. Whether you're starting from scratch or already well underway, this guide will assist you in establishing a successful and thriving business partnership with your friend. It can also shed light on issues that may have impacted your past collaborations.

Signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is a crucial initial step in starting a business or project with your friend or any partner. An MOU is a formal agreement that outlines the partnership's terms and conditions, including each partner's roles and responsibilities, profit division, and decision-making process. Having a written agreement helps to prevent misunderstandings and provides a clear understanding of expectations. In the event of a dispute, the MOU serves as a reference point and can save time and money by providing a clear understanding of what was agreed upon at the start of the partnership. As the business progresses, if there is a need to, this document can be amended to address current issues in your partnership.

The process of creating an MOU can be delicate and should not be taken lightly. This is where early signs of conflict may arise, and it's crucial that these issues are addressed and resolved satisfactorily. Trusting your friend is important, but relying solely on trust can be risky. When money starts flowing or tensions arise, having a well-drafted MOU can protect both the business and the friendship.

Some benefits of starting a business with a friend includes shared vision. A shared vision and values can foster a harmonious working relationship and minimize conflicts. Trust in each other's abilities, money management, and loyalty can simplify decision-making and navigating difficult situations. By dividing workload according to agreed parameters outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), stress levels can be reduced, and productivity improved. Having a friend as a business partner is a major benefit that provides a supportive environment to weather challenges and celebrate successes.

Let us look at the some challenges and how to address them. Conflict; conflict can pose a major challenge in partnerships with friends and often lead to the fear of compromising the friendship. However, it's essential to have a conflict resolution strategy in place, which can be outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). By clearly defining roles, responsibilities and establishing a decision-making process that works for both partners, conflicts can be prevented. Therefore, signing an MOU prior to starting the business is a necessary step to ensure a smooth partnership.

Varied work approaches  - Every individual has their own unique working style, which can cause friction when it differs from your partner's. Before embarking on a partnership, you may have only interacted during weekends or holidays, so these differences were never an issue. However, working together can bring these differences to light and exacerbate conflicts. It's important to be mindful of each other's strengths and weaknesses, and to approach the situation without judgment. For example, some individuals may work best in the morning, while others perform better during the day. The key is to find a way to work together and achieve deadlines effectively.

Imbalanced Workloads - A disproportionate distribution of responsibilities can lead to frustration and exhaustion in a partnership with a friend, especially if the MOU does not clearly outline each partner's role. It's crucial to consistently reassess the workload and make adjustments to ensure a fair distribution of tasks and prevent burnout of either one.

Preserving Personal Ties - When partnerships with friends don't go as planned, personal relationships can be put in jeopardy. It's crucial to maintain open communication, even in moments of disagreement, to avoid damaging the friendship. Being willing to reconcile and work through issues together can improve communication between partners, allowing for the expression of thoughts and feelings. This leads to better problem-solving and decision-making, potentially saving the friendship even if the business is not successful.

Finally, it can be a fantastic opportunity when you start a business or project with a friend but it's important to be aware of the potential pitfalls and to have a plan in place to deal with them. If you have clear goals, open communication, and a commitment to making the business a success, you and your friend can overcome any challenges and build a thriving business together. Remember, starting a business with a friend is a unique experience, and with the right approach, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. So, take the time to plan and prepare, and enjoy the journey as you build a successful business together.

E-commerce and the Future of Food Security in Africa

My effort to address work-life challenges of working professionals by creating an e-commerce platform for their shopping needs revealed the need to view Easyshop Easycook as not just a tech platform but a crucial player in the agriculture value chain. The challenge of delivering fresh produce to the customer successfully highlights the necessity of partnerships with farmers across Nigeria and the need for better infrastructure.

It is evident that e-commerce companies like Easyshop Easycook play a crucial role in expanding market reach for farmers, allowing them to connect with customers globally, broadening their customer base, and boosting their income. This is particularly significant for small-scale farmers who face limited access to local markets and resources for traditional sales channels. Our partnership with the World Bank and the Ministry of Agriculture in Lagos on the APPEALS project, Oxfam and other partnerships we have continues to support this stance.

E-commerce not only expands market access but also decreases transaction costs and minimizes adulteration. By cutting down on middlemen in the value chain, e-commerce platforms decrease business expenses for farmers and increases their profits restoring trust in the system. This is especially relevant in Africa where high transaction costs and contaminated goods pose significant trade barriers and hinder farmers from reaching markets and receiving fair prices for their products.

Food security is a critical issue in Africa, where millions of people lack access to adequate nutrition and suffer from hunger and malnutrition. The agricultural sector is a crucial part of the solution, providing food and livelihoods for millions of people across the continent.

The agricultural sector is a vital part of the African economy, employing more than 60% of the population and contributing to over 30% of the continent's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Despite its significance, the sector faces numerous challenges, such as limited access to markets, low productivity, and limited access to finance. In recent years, e-commerce has emerged as a potential solution to these challenges, offering farmers in Africa new opportunities to increase their income and connect with customers.

According to the African Development Bank (AfDB), e-commerce has the potential to transform the agricultural sector in Africa by improving market access and reducing transaction costs. In a recent report, the AfDB found that e-commerce could increase agricultural productivity by up to 25% and reduce transaction costs by up to 60%. These benefits are particularly significant for small-scale farmers, who often struggle to access markets and finance.

Despite these advantages, e-commerce adoption in the African agricultural sector remains low. According to the AfDB, only 5% of African farmers are currently using e-commerce platforms to sell their products. This is due to a number of barriers, including a lack of infrastructure, limited access to technology, and a lack of awareness of e-commerce opportunities.

To overcome these barriers and increase e-commerce adoption in the African agricultural sector, there are several key infrastructure components that need to be in place at the farm end. These include:

Reliable electricity and Storage- Farms need to have access to reliable and affordable electricity in order to power the technology needed for the sourcing process. This includes refrigeration and storage systems to keep produce fresh, as well as computers, printers, and other technology to manage orders and shipments.

Internet connectivity - A dependable internet connection is vital for maintaining communication with farms, executing orders, and overseeing supply chain logistics. This internet connectivity also gives farmers access to market data and information, enabling them to make informed decisions on crop selection and sales timing. Many farmers today cultivate crops based on readily available seeds from government agencies rather than market demand.

Transportation
- A
robust transportation infrastructure is crucial for transporting produce from farms to e-commerce companies. This can encompass a combination of road, rail, and air transportation, and may also entail the establishment of logistics centres and cold storage facilities to preserve produce freshness during transit. While it is encouraging to see investments in cargo airports and rail in Nigeria, further action is required to ensure that farm roads are suitable for and accessible by logistics companies.

Packaging and labelling - Proper packaging and labelling of produce is vital for food safety and maintaining quality standards, which is imperative for e-commerce companies. Standardized packaging and labelling systems that conform to international food safety norms must be adopted. Currently, there are several states using various local measuring methods such as bowls, baskets, tubs and cups, which cannot be accepted as standard units of measurement in e-commerce platforms.

Traceability and transparency - Maintaining a clear and comprehensive record of the journey of agricultural produce from the farm to the customer is essential for ensuring the transparency and traceability demanded by e-commerce companies. In order for these companies to meet international food safety standards, farmers must have accurate documentation covering each step of their farming process; which needs to be enforced by relevant agencies.

The issues in this sector present clear investment prospects for the private sector, but not all challenges can be addressed through monetary means. That is why we have more investment in FinTech than in E-commerce or AgTech. It's important to acknowledge the limitations of market-based solutions and collaborate to resolve the complex issues that cannot solely be solved through financial means. This necessitates a comprehensive approach that brings together government, communities, and individuals to work towards a shared objective. This also encompasses reducing obstacles for e-commerce startups, enhancing intellectual property protection, and expanding financing options for farmers and other industry players.

The growth of e-commerce has greatly influenced the agriculture industry in developed nations, leading to more efficient processes, lower expenses, and higher revenues for those involved in the sector. African countries can benefit from these examples by investing in necessary infrastructure, enhancing the business environment, and highlighting the advantages of e-commerce, which can result in increased food security and economic expansion.

Navigating Payment Systems in Nigeria's Ecommerce Sector

When Easyshop Easycook launched it’s beta version in 2001 the payment options for businesses were limited to cash or cheque. Bank transfers were available but not commonly used for product or service payments. Customers preferred to see me in person before placing an order or at point of delivery before paying in cash or cheque, due to trust concerns and our company's pioneer status in e-commerce. Since then, e-commerce in Nigeria has grown rapidly and more convenient ordering and payment methods have emerged; thanks to the booming fintech industry. However, choosing the right payment system for your e-commerce business in Nigeria today can be challenging, with many options available. This article will explore the payment systems in Nigeria's e-commerce market and guide you in selecting the right one for your business.

Using a payment gateway is a widely adopted payment system for websites in Nigeria. A few years after establishing Easyshop Easycook, GTBank Plc introduced a secure payment gateway for e-commerce sites, GTPay. Our company was among the first to implement this solution, making online orders more convenient for our customers. Although it had some issues, the payment gateway was largely successful.

More payment gateways have since emerged such as Flutterwave and Paystack that offer debit or credit cards options. These platforms have improved upon earlier payment gateways like GTPay, offering easier setup, deployment, and a more user-friendly dashboard for monitoring transactions. They are a great choice for businesses looking to reach customers both domestically and internationally also offering features such as recurring payments, multi-currency support, and fraud protection. Some even offer third-party marketplaces for small businesses that may not have the resources to build their own e-commerce website.

Mobile money is another payment option for e-commerce businesses. This system enables customers to pay for products and services using their mobile phones. Mobile money providers, such as Paga and OPay make transactions accessible without the need to visit a bank. USSD is another type of mobile payment system that allows customers to make transactions using their mobile phones by dialing a specific code.

Bank transfers are another possibility for e-commerce businesses in Nigeria. Banks have developed mobile applications that is now widely accepted by many customers. They have improved features making them easier and more user-friendly for customers. These apps can be used to pay for goods/services and check bank transactions. They are straightforward because many customers already have bank accounts.

Cash on delivery (COD) or point of sale (POS) is a payment option for e-commerce businesses seeking to provide customers with a simple and recognizable way to pay for their purchases upon delivery. Although COD and POS are convenient and favoured by customers, they may not be the most advantageous for businesses as they raise the risk of fraud and require extra resources for payment management and collection. Many businesses have experienced issues such as delivering to fake addresses or having no one present to receive the order. Additionally, there have been incidents of delivery staff being hurt or threatened when customers refused to pay at the point of receiving orders.

Over the years, Easyshop Easycook has discontinued the use of COD or POS and now provides payment gateways and accepts bank transfers for online orders. As a business operating for about 20 years with a money-back guarantee policy, our customers trust us and are comfortable using our provided options. They feel secure and know their money is safe, while we as a company feel secure knowing that our services are valued and paid for by reputable customers, creating a win-win scenario.

We have also applied this cashless payment system with most of our suppliers. Having a cashless payment system with suppliers offers numerous benefits to our business. Firstly, it increases efficiency and speed of transactions. Payments can be made promptly, reducing the need for manual processing and reducing the risk of errors. Secondly, a cashless system provides a secure and transparent payment method, reducing the risk of fraud and facilitating better record-keeping. Additionally, it improves cash flow management as payments are made automatically, reducing the risk of late payments and reducing the administrative burden of tracking payments. Furthermore, a cashless payment system improves relationships with our suppliers by streamlining payment processes, increases trust between parties and reduces the risk of disputes. It has come in very handy for us as Nigeria undergoes a cashless policy across board.

When selecting a payment system for an e-commerce business, it's crucial to consider factors like security, ease of use, speed, and cost. The needs of both customers and the business itself must also be taken into account. By carefully choosing the right payment system, e-commerce businesses can set themselves up for success and growth.

The Future of Work: The benefits of Investing in DEI Support

The future of work

The conception of Easyshop Easycook in 2001 was born out of a desire to support working professionals. I, as a soon-to-be-wed working woman, was contemplating the domestic challenges that I may face while balancing a full-time job. My friend and I sat down and discussed the household tasks that women typically manage and how technology could help. As a tech sector professional, I honed in on grocery shopping and conducted research to gauge addressable market size. With my background as a website developer, I built a website and established the company to tackle this challenge. The rest is history.

Over the years, I've explored the difficulties faced by working professionals. This led me to take a course in DEI to better understand the challenges and plan how Easyshop Easycook can effectively respond to them. To us, delivering fresh groceries is more than just providing food, it's about enabling a better lifestyle, strengthening marriages, advancing careers and generating wealth. This has been evident in the families we have supported over the past 20 years. Many of these women have grown from entry managers to top executives such as board chairs, federal ministers, commissioners, business owners, ambassadors and C-suite executives. Today, their grown children are using our service for their own homes, and it's a source of pride for me and a testament to our success.

In today's rapidly evolving business environment, organizations face the challenge of fostering diverse and inclusive workforces. With increasing emphasis on DEI, companies seek ways to support their staff and cultivate a harmonious work environment. One of the most impactful ways to achieve this objective is through investment in DEI support services; which aims to aid companies in establishing a culture of diversity and inclusiveness.

A recent report by McKinsey & Company, a leading management consulting firm, highlights the benefits of gender diversity in the workplace. According to the report, companies with gender-diverse leadership teams have a significantly higher chance of financial success, with a 21% higher likelihood of above-average profitability compared to companies with less gender diversity. Despite this, women remain underrepresented in top executive roles, with only 25% of C-suite positions globally held by women in 2020. The study found that companies with gender-diverse executive teams have a 56% higher operating profit margin, emphasizing the positive impact diversity can have on business performance. Despite progress in some regions, women's representation in senior management remains low, particularly in Africa and Latin America.

These numbers emphasize the significance of gender diversity in the work environment and the advantages that come from promoting diversity and inclusion. While many organizations are striving to increase gender diversity, they face challenges in implementing inclusive practices. Those that have succeeded in this effort have sought assistance from DEI support services to establish Employee Assisted Programs (EAPs) to ensure the success of their inclusion initiatives.

The presence of diversity in the workforce is crucial, but it's just as important to implement supportive structures that address the unique needs of employees. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) play a crucial role in this. EAPs aim to provide employees with the resources they need to tackle challenges that impact their work performance. This can include resources for work-life balance, mental health and wellness, financial support, legal assistance, substance abuse and addiction support, career development, health and wellness, stress management and family support.

By offering access to EAPs, companies can foster a sense of belonging and appreciation among employees. Providing employees with resources to tackle challenges they face helps retain talent and demonstrate that their wellbeing is a priority. Implementing these support services is a key aspect of creating an inclusive workplace.

At Easyshop Easycook, we offer a comprehensive lifestyle management program known as the

Employee Support Package (ESP) to corporate organizations. ESP provides employees with a variety of work-life balance resources that take care of everyday responsibilities and help them perform at their best in the workplace. It includes services such as shopping, nanny care, creche, laundry, gardening and more. Additionally, we've also customized ESP into Estate Support Package (ESP) for facility management companies serving high net worth residents in Lagos, and a Customer Support Package (CSP) for banks to acquire and retain high net worth customers.

Investment in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) support services is vital for companies looking to cultivate a more diverse and inclusive work atmosphere. At Easyshop Easycook, we have witnessed the beneficial outcomes of these services on our customers for about 20 years. By providing employees with the necessary support to succeed in a diverse workplace, companies can foster a more positive and productive work environment. Our customers especially women have achieved great strides in their careers, shattered barriers, pursued political careers, balanced work and parenthood, and challenged stereotypes, all thanks to the lifestyle support services they received. Today, companies that have implemented these crucial steps in their organizations are seeing the rewards.

Tackling Food Waste in Nigeria with E-commerce

Nigeria, a land of vibrant culture and rich history, is facing a major problem of food waste. Despite the fact that tons of food go to waste daily, many people still struggle to access food. However, there is a solution that can tackle this issue and save money for all.

Online grocery delivery companies, such as Easyshop Easycook and other e-commerce businesses, are leading the fight against food waste. These companies provide a platform for fresh food to be delivered directly from the farm to the table, saving produce from being wasted on the farms or in wholesale markets due to infrastructure challenges like bad roads, lack of storage facilities and affordable cold chain vehicles.
Tackling Food Waste in Nigeria

These delivery companies use various platforms, including websites, mobile apps, and social media, to connect farmers with consumers. They not only tackle food waste but also create jobs, empower people, add value, and create wealth through e-commerce. Small business owners who source directly from farmers have also become processors or manufacturers, eliminating food adulteration and offering easy-to-cook local foods.

Food waste is a major challenge in the agriculture supply chain in many African countries. Although the number of businesses in this sector is increasing, they face infrastructure challenges that make operating expensive. Addressing this requires government intervention, community involvement, and a collective effort.

E-commerce can play a significant role in reducing food waste by improving supply chain efficiency and reducing the amount of surplus food that goes to waste. One way e-commerce can do this is by connecting producers with consumers in real-time, allowing for more accurate forecasting of demand and reducing the amount of produce that is over-grown and goes unsold. This helps to ensure that food is produced and sold in a timely manner, reducing the risk of spoilage and waste.

Furthermore, e-commerce companies can play a role in reducing food waste by promoting more sustainable and conscious consumer behavior. For example, some e-commerce companies like Easyshop Easycook offer customers the option to purchase products in bulk, reducing packaging waste and allowing customers to only purchase what they need, reducing the amount of food that is wasted at the household level. E-commerce can also help to promote food waste reduction by making it easier for consumers to access surplus food from farmers and food producers, reducing the amount of food that is left unsold and ultimately discarded.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), up to 30% of food produced in Africa is lost due to inadequate storage, transportation, and marketing systems. By providing farmers with access to new markets and reducing food waste, e-commerce has the potential to increase the availability of food and improve food security in Africa.

As Nigeria takes advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement, it is crucial to recognize the role of the fresh grocery delivery companies in the agricultural value chain. Supporting them is vital to reducing food waste, creating wealth, and ensuring the success of the agreement. Whether small or big, these companies are essential to a thriving agriculture industry and must be supported to succeed.

Partnering for Prosperity: Boosting Your Home Business with Spousal Help

Partnering for Prosperity: Boosting Your Home Business with Spousal Help

As a new entrepreneur with a baby on the way and newlywed, I launched www.easyshopeasycook.com, a home-based delivery service e-commerce company. The work-from-home setup was ideal for balancing my business and domestic responsibilities, but I quickly realized that managing multiple roles could lead to stress. That's when I appreciated the significance of my spouse's support. His involvement was crucial in ensuring both the success of my business and our marriage. In this article, I'll highlight the key ways my spouse helped and how his support impacted my success.

Emotional support was crucial when I started Easyshop Easycook. Initially, I only had a vague idea of what I was doing but I believed I started the business to help working women buy fresh groceries. However, I quickly learned that the systems for sourcing, processing, and delivering were not in place. Each day brought new challenges, but my spouse's daily encouragement helped me overcome my doubts and stay motivated. Although he had no prior experience in starting a business, his reassuring words provided the emotional support I needed.

Assisting with tasks: My background is in website development, so I had limited knowledge in bookkeeping and accounting. Nonetheless, I knew that keeping accurate records was essential for the success of my business. My spouse, a chartered accountant, provided valuable assistance in this area. He gave me a template to use during the day and reviewed it each evening when he returns from his own workplace. His support was crucial in ensuring the implementation of proper corporate governance principles and tax compliance from the start, which I am very thankful for. I emphasize the importance of bookkeeping in my entrepreneurship classes, and my spouse sometimes joins and adds humor about our early days. Although, don't take everything he says too seriously.

Offering constructive feedback: Entrepreneurship can be a solitary journey, especially for a pioneer business like mine, with no mentors to turn to in the early days as people thought I was crazy. However, my spouse was a supportive partner who understood my vision. As I put into practice what I learned from my research and training programs, he was available to offer constructive feedback.

Unique Skills and Perspective: I often share with my mentees and students that your spouse's skills are a valuable extension to yours and can benefit your business at no cost. My spouse, a chartered accountant, brings a wealth of experience from working in technology, dredging and waste management industries, providing valuable perspectives for me. His diverse skills and background played a crucial role in strengthening my business in the early stages and made us appealing to angel investors.

Shared workload: As Easyshop Easycook is a service aimed at supporting working men and women, I didn't want to neglect my own household while helping others maintain theirs. My spouse and I divided domestic responsibilities and decided to hire staff and other support services for assistance where needed. I also acquired a personal driver and we planned school activities around my business schedule. This allowed me to balance my roles as a spouse, mother, and business owner and be productive in all areas.

Shared financial responsibility: Starting a business can be financially draining, when you have a supportive spouse and you open up your business to him/her, this becomes easier to manage. From pooling resources together to designing fund raising slides. My husband had over 20 different cashflow projections of my business. I will design the pitch deck based on the target sum and he will create a cashflow sheet for my deck. Very early on in the business, I was able to separate personal funds from business funds because of his influence.

Collaborating with your spouse is crucial for success in a home-based business. A supportive spouse made a big impact on my success as a working woman. Without their understanding, encouragement, constructive feedback, social connections, financial management, and unconditional love, I wouldn't have been able to balance the multiple roles I play effectively.

Starting a Home Business? Watch Out for These 10 Challenges

Early beginnings of Easyshop Easycook

Starting a home business can be an exciting and rewarding experience, especially for a stay-at-home-mum who also wants to earn her own income while choosing to stay home to care for her children but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. From cash flow to managing finances to maintaining a work-life balance, running a home business requires a unique set of skills and a lot of hard work.

I started www.easyshopeasycook.com as a home business immediately after I got married, moved out after about 5 years to a bigger office space and we’ve been opened for almost 20years. In this blog post, we'll take a look at the top 10 challenges that I faced when I started my business and look at practical tips on how I over came them which you can learn from. It does not matter if you are just starting out or have been running your business for a while, this information will help you navigate the ups and downs of being your own boss so that you can stay in business and scale when you are ready.

Managing finances and cash flow

Effective financial management is crucial for business success. I established a dedicated budget, separate business bank account and tracked expenses daily using spreadsheet and notebook. I also made sure to pay back loans promptly to establish a reputation as a responsible borrower, which helped me secure first angel investors.

Maintaining work-life balance

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for both your personal well-being and your professional success. Working from home can be demanding, and it's important to take regular breaks and find ways to recharge. As a busy mother, wife, and business owner, I understand the challenges of balancing multiple responsibilities. However, I made sure to make time for myself, including scheduling 1 hour of exercise 5 days a week and actively seeking out social and recreational activities that bring me joy. On the other hand, it's also important to set boundaries and stay disciplined to avoid getting caught in a cycle of laziness. Achieving balance requires discipline and self-care, but it's worth the effort to maintain a healthy balance in all aspects of life.

Staying organized and productive

Staying organized and productive is crucial for remote work success. One strategy is to create a dedicated work area in your home, set a consistent routine, such as a "commute" time, and create a daily to-do list. Establishing clear boundaries with friends and family can also help, by letting them know your work hours and not allowing unnecessary visits during that time. Additionally, treating yourself as if you were in an office environment, such as getting dressed and ready for the day, can help you mentally prepare for work and stay focused on tasks. By implementing these simple strategies, you'll be able to stay organized and productive, even when working from home.

Finding and retaining customers

Acquiring and retaining customers is crucial for the success of any business. As a home-based entrepreneur, it can be challenging to find and connect with potential customers. To overcome this, I leveraged my personal network by enlisting the help of my sister, husband, and friends to introduce my business, www.easyshopeasycook.com , to their contacts. By targeting working individuals who would benefit from my grocery support services, I was able to find my target market. Today, social media provides a powerful tool for building online communities and reaching new customers. However, it's also important to remember that retaining existing customers is just as important as acquiring new ones. Providing high-quality service and keeping promises is key to customer retention and ultimately, the growth of the business.

Marketing and advertising

Marketing and advertising are essential for any business, regardless of size or location. As a small business operating from home, you may have a limited budget for these efforts, but that doesn't mean you can't make an impact. Utilize the vast array of inexpensive advertising packages available on various social media platforms, and take advantage of free design template apps to create professional-looking marketing materials. Do your research, watch tutorials and study the strategies of established businesses in your field. By learning from their successes and finding ways to differentiate yourself, you can effectively market and advertise your business, even with a limited budget.

Dealing with legal and compliance issues

Dealing with legal and compliance issues is a critical aspect of running a business. When starting my business, www.easyshopeasycook.com , a food logistics company, I registered my business name and opened a bank account. It is important to stay informed about the regulations that apply to your business, such as licenses, taxes, and certifications. For a food logistics company, it is essential to maintain food safety training and certifications. I also made sure to stay compliant with all necessary taxes and licenses, and to plan for the scaling of the business. As a small business owner, it is important to take legal and compliance issues seriously, and to seek out free legal services that may be available for your line of business. This will help you stay compliant and avoid any legal issues that might arise in the future.

Building a professional network

Building a professional network is a vital component of business success. Early on in my business, I recognized the importance of surrounding myself with like-minded individuals in order to stay focused and grow quickly. To achieve this, I joined www.wimbiz.org, an association of women in business, management and public service. Through this organization, I was able to connect with peers, share industry insights, and market my services. The association also provided me with access to various programs that helped me improve my business management skills and form new connections. Over the last 10 years, I also joined other organizations such as NASME, NBCC, AWEC, LCCI among others. Joining these groups has been a great way to expand my professional network and gain valuable insights into my industry.

Staying current with industry trends

Staying current with industry trends is crucial for staying competitive in today's business landscape. Joining industry associations can be a great way to stay informed about the latest developments in your field, many of which now offer online platforms such as WhatsApp or Telegram groups where members can share news and insights. To maximize the benefits of these associations, I recommend actively participating and contributing your time and talents. This will not only help you build valuable connections, but it may also open up opportunities such as training, grants, and small loans that are only available to members. As a home-based business owner, it's essential to position yourself as a small business and take advantage of all the resources available to you in your industry.

Managing and motivating employees

Managing and motivating employees is essential for business growth. As a start-up, I had to be mindful of my budget and found creative ways to attract and retain staff. I identified the areas where I needed the most help, such as cleaning and prepping groceries for our www.easyshopeasycook.com customers, and recruited high school leavers who lived nearby. As the business grew, I was able to offer part-time college programs to interested staff members. It was important to have clear and simple standard operating procedures in place to ensure consistent and high-quality service to customers, despite our being a small, home-based business. By focusing on clear communication, education and development opportunities, I was able to attract and retain motivated staff members.

Securing funding and investment

As a home-based business, your initial investment should come from your own savings. This demonstrates your commitment to the business and makes it easier to secure funding from family and friends. Keep detailed records and take your venture seriously. This initial period is a crucial proof-of-concept phase, during which you can test and refine your business model. Once you are confident that your business is ready to expand, consider seeking out small grants and angel investors to help fuel growth. Remember that capital is the lifeblood of any business, and educate yourself about the different types of funding available to make informed decisions for your business.

Starting a home business is challenging but with perseverance and the right strategies, you can overcome any obstacle. Stay organized, motivated, and focused on your goals. Success takes time and effort but with dedication, you can turn your home business into a thriving enterprise. Don’t build alone, it is important you involve your spouse and children from the beginning so they can understand how to help achieve success. Stay positive, keep moving forward and you'll get there.
